Meet Melanie
I am a multidisciplinary artist working in both photography and painting, guided by intuition, emotion, and a deep reverence for the unseen beauty of the natural world. My creative process draws heavily from dreams, memories, and inner landscapes. I believe magic is everywhere if we know how to look. My work seeks to reveal the extraordinary hidden within the ordinary.
As a photographer, I prefer to capture images 'in camera' (rather than creating composites) and use thoughtful post-processing to create images that feel dreamlike and immersive, yet remain true to life. Often featuring women in nature, my photographs explore the interplay between femininity, strength, and the environment; and are often a reflection of my own childhood adventures through prairies, forests, and quiet wild spaces.
In contrast, my paintings are entirely memory and imagination based. I intentionally avoid using reference photos in order to keep my painting practice separate from photography. Instead, I enter a flow state, allowing imagery to emerge organically on the canvas. My paintings are deeply personal, often rooted in archetypal stories, recurring dreams, and the emotional textures of lived experience.
Together, these two mediums allow me to express the world not just as it is, but as it feels: layered, symbolic, and quietly alive. My work has been featured in many publications and industry blogs, including Sony Alpha Universe and Sigma Corporation. I have also contributed to two books that are sold on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and won multiple awards for my work, including winning the Sony Alpha Female Micro Grant.
In my spare time I enjoy reading, gardening, watching sci-fi and fantasy movies, playing pickleball, hiking, traveling with my husband and learning Japanese.
