The Dryad Of Sandstone Lake
The Dryad Of Sandstone Lake
(August 2024) Sandstone Falls, WV
Description:
I visited Sandstone Falls for the first time this summer. The drive to get there was miles and miles of a lonely narrow winding road, but it was worth it! There are several places to view the multiple falls, and all are spectacular! There were people kayaking in the main falls area so photographing there wasn't the best option, although I did find a view of the falls for another images in this series. As I was exploring, I found this area that accessed the river. I was enchanted by this lone sycamore tree and decided I must make an image here.
I wanted to create an image of a tree spirit using a soft dreamy feel; which required a slow shutter speed to blur the water. That also meant I needed to be fairly still in my pose because if I moved quickly I would be blurry in the image. (I actually had several images that were unusable for this reason) In the end I got this image that matched my vision!
Sandstone Falls is the largest waterfall on the New River. It is 1500 feet wide with 10-25 foot drops and is divided by a series of islands. It's a must see if you are visiting the area!
